Advancing Sustainable Food Processing for Resilient and Inclusive Food Systems in Africa: Strategies, Challenges, and Opportunities
摘要
Sustainable food processing plays a critical role in enhancing food security, promoting economic growth, and fostering environmental sustainability in Africa. This study explores strategies, challenges, and opportunities in advancing sustainable food processing to build resilient and inclusive food systems across the continent. It assesses the current state of food processing in Africa, highlighting its impact on food security, economic development, and rural livelihoods. The chapter used a qualitative research methodology to collect data from expansive literature to achieve the chapter objectives. The results found out that key strategies for advancing sustainable food processing include adopting innovative technologies, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing value addition. However, the sector faces significant challenges, particularly for small-scale processors, including limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, regulatory barriers, and technological gaps. Despite these challenges, there are substantial opportunities for scaling up sustainable food processing through policy interventions, private sector investments, and regional trade cooperation under the African Continental Free Trade Area. The study recommends policy and practical solutions to enhance the role of sustainable food processing, such as expanding financial support, promoting renewable energy adoption, strengthening market linkages, and improving capacity-building initiatives.
