An Overview of Agricultural and Food Systems Digital Initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa
摘要
Africa’s food systems are in disarray, with widespread hunger and malnutrition characterising the continent, particularly due to climate change, conflict and hyperinflation. The region’s food security is extremely weak, with many countries facing severe hunger and famine. Africa is unlikely to end hunger and achieve sustainable food systems. This chapter reviews the interventions in the agricultural and food systems deployed to deal with the challenge. Underpinned by a content analysis approach, the chapter draws from primary and secondary literature, mainly organisational websites, blogs and academic texts. The objectives were to identify digital initiatives in African agricultural and food systems and to discuss the potential impact of digital initiatives on African agriculture and food systems. The review shows that although still embryonic, African farmers, particularly agribusinesses, are integrating digital technologies in crop, poultry and livestock production. The review also shows that African farmers widely view digital initiatives as promising to transform African agriculture and food systems by improving efficiency, sustainability and inclusivity, eventually contributing to food security, economic growth and rural industrialisation. It concludes that by leveraging technology, African agriculture and food systems can benefit from enhanced agricultural productivity, improved supply chain management, reduced food waste and more informed decision-making.
