To fully appreciate the distinctive features of Chinese astronomy, it is useful to briefly recall the key technical and scientific developments that enabled Western astronomy—from its origins to the end of the seventeenth century—to achieve a profound understanding of celestial kinematics. In this overview, I will focus exclusively on aspects that highlight the mathematical nature of Western astronomy, along with the instruments and observational methods it employed.
