Leveraging Security Vulnerabilities in Proactive Dashcam Forensics
摘要
Dashboard cameras are becoming increasingly prevalent in vehicles, offering valuable sources of evidence in a wide range of investigations. This chapter describes a novel dashcam forensics methodology that shifts from reactive evidence extraction to proactive evidence extraction without physical access. Common security vulnerabilities existing across dashcam models such as weak default passwords, exploitable operating systems and outdated services, and insecure communications protocols are leveraged for evidence extraction. The effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated by gaining remote root access to popular dashcam models, enabling the acquisition of configuration data, recordings and even real-time video streams. The proactive methodology offers significant advantages to law enforcement agencies, enabling expedited data retrieval in time-sensitive investigations while preserving evidence integrity.
