Entangled Sustainabilities: News Media Partnerships and Generative AI Market Power
摘要
AI infrastructures are central to the understanding of market concentration in the generative AI industry. This chapter adopts a political economy perspective on strategic partnerships between news media and generative AI providers to reflect on their role in manifesting market and media concentration. A joint sustainability and political economy perspective provides added analytical value by connecting the often-separated concerns about economic, social and environmental sustainability in relation to generative AI and grounding these within the economic rationales of organisations in the field. The chapter relies on a network analysis of strategic partnerships between news media and generative AI organisations that have become standard in the industry. The results show that current news media partnerships perpetuate the market power of dominant generative AI providers, which, due to their US focus, reproduce only select knowledge repositories and limit the range of perspectives accessible, and through their orientation towards dominant generative AI providers, further their environmentally harmful practices. To conclude, the chapter argues for more critical media and communication research to analyse the far-reaching social, environmental justice and democratic implications when news media become part of generative AI infrastructures.
