The role of the theatre director in contemporary society is particularly delicate, as he/she has to grasp and interpret artistically the constant changes in social and cultural life. Another important aspect is the responsibility that the director assumes about the audience, who expects a positive stimulus for their quality of life from the theatrical performance. Carlo Roncaglia is a director and trainer, who manages the theatre company Accademia dei Folli in Turin. The article concerns the specifics of the work of a theatre director in contemporary society, with reference to the relationship with actors and the audience. It is about understanding what role theatre can play in a very fluid and complex social and cultural context. Other issues relate to the relationship between the creative dimension and the use of established techniques in stage management, lighting, sound, and music. It is important to dwell on the director’s experience as a trainer in courses for amateur actors. A different role from the usual one, which can be useful in discovering new skills and systematizing one’s knowledge. A symbiosis has been created between the director and the trainer in the name of creativity, organization, and professionalism. The theatre director becomes a cultural operator in a comprehensive way and directly imparts knowledge and practices to young people and adults through training activities.
