Modelling Scrum Product Goal with North Star Metric Approach
摘要
Scrum Product Goal describes a future state of the product that can serve as a target for the Scrum Team to plan against. Product Goal is the long-term objective of the Scrum Team [10], to deliver value. Therefore, the rest of Scrum’s artefacts are influenced by the Product. Goal as all of them must serve the Scrum Team to achieve it; Product Goal influences the Product Backlog, which influences the Sprint Backlog, which influences the Sprint Goal, which influences the Scrum Team work and ceremonies. Consequently, setting up the correct Product Goal is one of the most important task for a Scrum Team, and it is not an easy task. The North Star Metric framework (NSM) is a product management model based on a single metric, the NSM, that best captures the value customers derive from the product [5]. Therefore, Product Goal modelling with the NSM framework is shown as one specific approach to ensure 1) communication alignment among stakeholders, 2) successful objective definition and 3) optimised prioritisation. This paper shows the benefits and challenges of using the NSM framework to define a Product Goal in Scrum and which enterprises have applied the same approach.
