Perspectives on Generative AI Versus Ontology-Based Engineering Systems in Aerospace Manufacturing Design
摘要
With the rise of deep learning and generative artificial intelligence (AI) models, the expert-systems or Ontology-based Engineering (OBE) systems are perceived as complementary by the scientific and industrial community, with no clear view of where the technological advances will bring us. Parallels between human reasoning and decision making in the two types of systems have been drawn many times during history by researchers. However, what will this entail to manufacturing companies specially in the aerospace industry? How will they protect their intellectual property while making most of the technological advances?. As many questions arise, the objective of this paper is to discuss both Generative AI and OBE systems, their advantages and limitations in regards to complex systems design like aerospace manufacturing systems. This paper provides a set of Research Questions (RQ) and the author’s position to them, to serve as future research work and topics of discussion for the scientific community.
