Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter situates the study within recent scholarship on Barbary captivity, Mediterranean history, and early modern global connections. Although research has increasingly explored the interactions between European states and the Ottoman provinces of North Africa,Sweden has rarely been considered within this historiography. The chapter therefore asks how Barbary captivity, ransom systems, diplomacy, and maritime trade linked Sweden to the Maghreb in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. By framing these encounters as part of a wider history of interconnected maritime worlds, it introduces the book’s key questions concerning the social impact of captivity, the development of diplomatic relations, and changing understandings of slavery and freedom. The chapter also outlines the study’s sources and methodological approach.
