Language and Digital Activism: Kenya’s Gen Z Political Protests on X
摘要
This chapter interrogates linguistic strategies used by Kenya’s Gen Z during the protest against the Finance Bill 2024. It analyses the use of language such as Kiswahili and Sheng for political protest. The qualitative study, based on the platform society theory, sampled three hashtags #OccupyParliament, #RejectFinanceBill2024, and #TotalshutdownKenya which were employed on the X platform between June and July 2024. Findings indicate that informal, relatable and emotionally charged language was used on X to protest against the Finance Bill 2024. For Kenya’s Gen Z, language became a tool to express dissent against the bill, and demand for political accountability. By employing hashtag chaining, varied language, code-mixing, satire, humour and allusion, protesters crafted a discourse that was locally rooted. The use of Sheng not only connected youthful protestors but excluded outsiders, offering a form disruptive civic engagement. The study concluded that the use of local languages was not just a means of political communication, but also created cultural resonance and served as an identity marker among Kenya’s Gen Z.
