Indigenisation and Linguistic Inclusion in Postcolonial Governance: A Case of Ogu Language on X
摘要
Governments increasingly recognise the importance of preserving indigenous languages. This chapter examines Lagos State’s use of the minority Ogu language on its X account ( ) to engage citizens. Grounded in postcolonial and critical indigenisation theories, the study employs mixed methods; a quantitative survey of Ogu-speaking followers and a semi-structured interview with the Director of Social Media. Findings reveal that incorporating Ogu language into digital governance disrupts postcolonial linguistic power structures and counters the dominance of colonial and major indigenous languages. This digitalisation enhances Ogu's visibility in urbanised, multi-ethnic Lagos, reinforcing symbolic and practical inclusivity in state communication while promoting minority linguistic identities.
