Historical and recent data indicate that five tsunami events have occurred along the South African coast since 1960, with the earliest caused by the Mw 9.5 earthquake off the Chilean coast in 1960. These events are primarily linked to remote submarine seismic activity and local atmospheric disturbances. Whilst tsunamisTsunamis are rare, they can cause substantial fatalities, economic damage and disruption to critical infrastructure. To mitigate these risks, hazardHazards and risk assessments are essential, with a proposed disaster risk reductionDisaster risk reduction framework (DRRF) emphasising collaborative efforts between officials and communitiesCommunities to enhance preparedness and response.
