This paper presents the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in Islamic Da’wah as part of the efforts made to utilize AI in the spread of religion to increase the effectiveness of religious advocacy through the automation of responses to common religious questions, content recommendations and online engagement. To assess AI applications in making Islamic teachings more accessible and at the same time abiding by the ethical principles of the religion, a framework was developed. The results showed that AI systems are suitable for enhancing the efficiency of Da’wah in customized user experience, generate the appropriate religious content for different kinds of media, answer the users instantly, and create the relevant suggestions for social media and websites. A case study conducted on one of the selected Da’wah applications, showed that AI based tools increased the audiences’ engagement by 30% and minimized the time that religious leaders spend on manual tasks. Notwithstanding such encouraging findings, the study identified several important ethical considerations about the use of AI in Da’wah, among them the risk of AI usurping religious authority, the necessity of human oversight in AI assisted generation of content, and the need for transparent algorithms for Da’wah purposes. The findings of the study validate that AI can be a force multiplier for the Islamic Da’wah, however, it needs to be handled with cautions to ensure the authenticity of Islamic teaching and avoid any sort of manipulation of religious values.
