Principles of Surgical Management: Ablative Techniques for Skeletal Metastases
摘要
Multidisciplinary care is key to excellent outcomes in skeletal metastases. Patients should be evaluated by a team that includes a surgeon/proceduralist with experience in percutaneous/minimally invasive ablation. Different modalities exist which can be employed depending on the location of the lesion, nearby structures at risk, and type. These techniques are often combined with orthopedic fixation. With these multidisciplinary procedures, patient’s lytic bone lesions or pathologic fractures can be treated definitively or in conjunction with radiotherapy or chemotherapy to improve the patient’s quality of life and prevent skeletal-related events by prophylactically treating at-risk bones and stabilizing fractures.
