Empowering Communities for Ocean Sustainability: ICoRSA’s Perspective on the Importance of Community Engagement and Stakeholder Involvement in Marine Initiatives
摘要
This chapter is presented by the International Consortium of Researcher Staff Associations (ICoRSA) and examines the interdependence between local communities and Ocean initiatives, emphasising the vital role of community engagement and stakeholder involvement in marine sustainability. The chapter explores the intersection of education, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and participatory research methods, stressing the necessity of involving local communities in sustainable Ocean stewardship. Beyond the MUSICA project, the PHAROS project is highlighted as an exemplary model of community-driven marine initiatives. By integrating ‘Nature-Based Solutions’, participatory governance, and citizen science, PHAROS demonstrates the impact of community empowerment on Ocean sustainability. Its ‘Living Labs’ and ‘Educational Platforms’ strongly align with the mission and vision of the Ocean Decade, reinforcing the need for collaboration across various initiatives to advance global marine conservation goals. Additionally, the chapter provides practical insights and recommendations for practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and educators on integrating community engagement strategies into sustainable governance. It ultimately advocates for a holistic and inclusive approach to addressing contemporary environmental challenges, underscoring the importance of shared responsibility and cooperative efforts in marine conservation.
