There is an urgent need for Ocean Literacy (OL) to empower citizens to understand how the functioning of our planet is linked to their lives, enabling informed decisions about habits and lifestyles. Efforts worldwide aim to inspire interest in and promote the conservation of the Ocean, transforming how people view and relate to it. We propose playing with similarities and analogies as powerful tools for communicating and learning about the Ocean in an engaging, dialogical way that fosters social exchange and discussion in a positive learning environment. This approach may help construct a more Ocean-centered worldview. Analogies can provide understanding and insight into the Ocean by bridging the more familiar terrestrial world with the lesser-known and less visible marine domain, thereby enhancing OL. We present the Land or Sea game as a tool to facilitate this shift in perspective. Results from five case studies show highly positive evaluations. The game effectively enhances imaginative access to marine environments and fosters knowledge, awareness, interest, creativity, curiosity, and observational skills. A holistic understanding of the Ocean may be key to restoring humanity’s relationship with it—and, by extension, with the natural world as a whole.

摘要
