Introduction to the Use of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics

Utilization of long-acting injectable medications for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder has increased with an influx of medications in this formulation into the marketplace. This formulation has increased adherence, time to relapse, retention in treatment, and decreased relapses in patients. Additionally, patients prefer this formulation when provided with the option. This chapter will provide insights into the history of long-acting injectables, including benefits and risks associated with their use in treatment regimens. Clinical pearls on how to approach a patient to discuss this option are also provided.
