Green Hydrogen Storage Tanks: Challenges, Innovations, and Future Perspectives

The urgent need to minimize CO2 emissions has highlighted the importance of developing sustainable energy alternatives. Hydrogen, with its ability to replace fossil fuels, is a strong prospect for a variety of purposes, particularly transportation. Compressed gas, cryogenic liquid, and solid-state storage are the three basic technologies for renewable hydrogen storage, and each presents specific obstacles that must be addressed in order to improve uptake and integration into vehicle systems. This chapter examines the present state of hydrogen storage technology, focusing on Composite Hydrogen Storage Vessels (CHSVs). It assesses their technological capabilities, manufacturing costs, safety concerns, and environmental impact. Special emphasis is made on fiber-reinforced polymer composite CHSVs, with a focus on recent advances, end-of-life recycling alternatives, and the significance of numerical modeling. Furthermore, the chapter explores the use of artificial intelligence approaches to improve the design and performance of CHSVs, thereby contributing to a more sustainable hydrogen economy. By addressing these crucial aspects, the chapter hopes to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future prospects for hydrogen storage technology.
