This paper leverages recent advances in the field of self-healing structural materials and presents the preliminary results of a larger experimental programme on the development of sustainable self-healing TRM systems. Thirty specimens were manufactured, consisting of one layer of glass textile embedded in a CEM II-based mortar prism. Two different approaches were followed to impart self-healing characteristics: (a) incorporation of crystalline admixtures into the cementitious mortar during mortar casting, and (b) textile coating using an inorganic slurry of crystalline admixtures and/or silica fume. The specimens were pre-cracked at an age of 28 days to a residual crack mouth opening of 0.2 mm, and the self-healing effectiveness was assessed through capillary absorption and mechanical tests after one month of additional conditioning in water. Flexural and compressive tests on the mortars were also performed at the same age to assess the residual performance. The results are assessed in terms of sorptivity, crack sealing and residual mechanical properties, paving the way towards the development of sustainable self-healing TRM systems.

摘要
