Artificial intelligence (AI) can have a key impact on emergency surgical flow and operating rooms because this technology can contribute to the “processing of patients.” AI can affect the flow of emergency surgical patients when it supports diagnosis, management of the patient, and facilities where patients are treated. Tools such as value stream mapping and process mapping are helpful to improve the delivery of care for the diagnosed patients and empower clinicians and managers. They provide guidance to change how emergency wards manage patients. They support the decision-making process necessary for healthcare improvement and ensure it is logically sound and coherent. In addition to these tools, the drafting of a business case and of a project plan facilitates the implementation of an AI solution.
