Consumer Perception Regarding the Application of Nanotechnology in Food

Nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative tool in the food industry, operating at the molecular level to enhance food production, preservation, and safety. Due to their unique physicochemical properties, nanomaterials improve food quality, shelf life, and sensory attributes. Innovations such as nanoencapsulation facilitate controlled release of bioactive compounds, while nanostructured ingredients and nanosensors enhance food processing, packaging, and real-time safety monitoring. Despite its vast potential, the adoption of nanotechnology in food systems faces challenges related to consumer acceptance and regulatory concerns. Most consumers have limited technical knowledge to understand the technologies involved in food processing. Thus, many are apprehensive about new foods and new technologies. Some studies have shown that the public has a positive attitude toward nanotechnology. Then, strategic informative efforts and transparency in technological applications are essential for fostering trust and integration. This chapter explores consumer perceptions, behaviors, and the general implications of nanotechnology for food production.
