Future networks are the communication technologies designed for rapidly increasing needs for hyper-connectivity that are faster, more secure, and more resilient, and also focus on building a digitally inclusive society. These technologies are also focusing on achieving UN SDGs targets, especially net-zero emissions, climate change, and innovation. These technologies are expected to enable a fully digital world with connected humans, machines, things, and places, supporting realistic virtual experiences. Future networks are enabled by technologies, such as AI, edge computing, 6G, MIMO, RIS, trusted connectivity, Li-Fi, and THz communication. Future networks are poised to enable transformative applications, foster innovation and economic growth, and boost connectivity in regions with poor or no coverage. Accordingly, this chapter focuses on understanding what future networks are, which technologies are driving these capabilities, and how they could potentially help achieve the target of building a digitally inclusive ecosystem for all.
