Air networks are aerial communication networks that operate within the Earth’s atmosphere, which helps in assisting the military operations and the disaster recovery phase. Additionally, it also provides regional coverage for a particular use case, location, or application, and offers a temporary communication setup in remote and disaster-affected areas. An airborne communication system comprises airborne platforms, which include various systems, vehicles, or structures equipped with communication technologies, and includes technologies, such as UAVs, NTFPs, and HAPS. These technologies are still quite in an early developmental stage, and further development is required before technology can globally bridge the digital divide to support wide-scale commercialization as well as large-scale spectrum allocation, monitoring, and optimization. Nevertheless, this chapter introduces these technologies, explores their role in bridging the digital divide, while leveraging economic and environmental modeling to build a sustainable solution.

摘要
