Space networks involve communication systems that operate beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, orbiting the Earth at varying altitudes to provide global coverage. Space networks through satellites support global applications such as broadcasting, satellite TV, navigation, and Internet services, to offer robust and ubiquitous communication services that help provide connectivity in remote areas, oceans, and space, especially where deploying terrestrial networks is not feasible. The integration of satellites with terrestrial networks–driven by initiatives like Starlink and similar projects offering subsidized pricing–has made it possible to deliver affordable and reliable connectivity, helping bridge a digital divide that was previously inaccessible through conventional satellite technologies. Therefore, this chapter focuses on exploring satellites for bridging the digital divide, highlighting the need for innovative business models, techno-economic assessments, and environmental modeling to assess their accessibility, availability, and affordability.
