This opening chapter is an introduction to the volume that sets out the ground to be covered. Rather than pursuing an analysis of the kind that would yield a unitary or essentialist definition of literary interpretation, the plan is to consider a wide range of cases that show how interpretation proceeds in the closest back-and-forth interaction between philosophy and literary texts. Each chapter is discussed here briefly in a way that will allow a reader to have a conceptual map of the overall project and how it fits together before turning to the individual chapters.
