This chapter examines the Kuhnian concept of normal science. For Kuhn, normal science occupied the majority of the working scientist’s time, and this activity did not involve anything like the critical testing of a paradigm; rather, the scientist attempted to further articulate and extend the paradigm in question (in contrast to Popperian ideas that the scientists’ job was to critically test a theory). We begin with Kuhn’s characterisation of ‘pre-paradigm’ science, that is, the practice of science in a field before a paradigm has been adopted. We then move onto the characteristics of normal science, in particular examining Kuhn’s characterisation of the activity of ‘puzzle-solving’. We then move on to examine Kuhn’s thoughts on the normative role that dogma plays in the practice of science, before concluding the chapter with a look at the debates between Kuhn and Karl Popper at the London colloquium of 1965: a debate that largely revolved around the idea of normal science.
