The canoe’s spiritual heritage appears to be nearly extinct in Imbotero, but observations made during the first season of fieldwork showed continuity with past practice in other aspects of canoe use. A second season of fieldwork, however, revealed rapid change occurring in the village’s relationship with the dugout canoe, raising concern for the persistence of its heritage there. Supply and demand for canoes are adequate at this time but both appear likely to contract in the near future. Prospective growth in tourism presents both opportunities and challenges to the heritage. Climate-induced sea-level rise threatens the viability of Imbotero itself along with much of its heritage, although in some scenarios, canoe use could persist or even increase. Safeguarding measures are suggested in response to some of these challenges.
