This chapter examines the basics of natural plant-based fibres, their uses and extraction methods. Natural fibres can be classified into five categories: wood fibres, stem/bast fibres, leaf fibres, seed fibres and fibres from grasses and other annual plants. Their properties depend on the biomass of origin and the extraction methods applied. We also describe one of the main industrial extraction processes, the hydrothermal fibre production process, which involves biomass pressure processing followed by steam explosion treatment.

摘要

This chapter examines the basics of natural plant-based fibres, their uses and extraction methods. Natural fibres can be classified into five categories: wood fibres, stem/bast fibres, leaf fibres, seed fibres and fibres from grasses and other annual plants. Their properties depend on the biomass of origin and the extraction methods applied. We also describe one of the main industrial extraction processes, the hydrothermal fibre production process, which involves biomass pressure processing followed by steam explosion treatment.
