Wartime
摘要
This chapter continues to explore Mann’s exchanges on mythology with Kerényi, along with their lives during the war. It provides an account of Lukács’s arrest and interrogations by the Soviet NKVD, and a discussion of Lukács and Mann’s reflections on Goethe’s Faust. It then turns to Mann’s decision to write Doctor Faustus before offering an analysis of that great work. It concludes with an account of Márai’s life and work during the war—and Lukács’s attack on both.
