Humanizing Cities Through Urban Design: Urban Design Principles and Policymaking Considerations
摘要
The pace urbanization over the past decades altered the fabric of cities, often prompting the emergence of built environment seemingly disconnected from the needs of city residents. As a way of alleviating this trend, modern urban planning prioritizes social well-being, accessibility, and sustainability. Given the interconnected nature of urban planning, policymaking, funding requirements and investors’ expectations, the question is how to measure the degree to which urban environments are human centered. Referencing the case of Jeddah, the objective of this paper is to develop a framework that will serve as a tool to assess the degree to which a city, and so urban design, embrace human-centered principles. Taking into account tangible factors, such as design characteristics and public space availability, and non-tangible factors, such as citizen/community engagement, a conceptual framework developed is developed. It is then applied to evaluate the city of Jeddah. The findings indicate that Jeddah is well positioned to support future strategies to improve living standards across physical, social, and economic dimensions. The study highlights as well in which domains urban inclusivity and a city’s resilience may still be advanced in view of contributing to a more cohesive and engaged society.
