In her essay, “The Mummy’s Return: A Kleinian Film Scenario,” Annette Michelson provided a psychoanalytic reading of Harry Smith’s iconic film Heaven and Earth Magic (1950–1960). Specifically, Michelson argued that the iconography and structure of the film are best understood through the lens of Melanie Klein’s psychoanalytic theories regarding a child’s perception of its mother. But Michelson herself was influenced by scholarship on gnosticism, especially Hans Jonas’s book, The Gnostic Religion (1958). The essay reflects on Harry Smith’s motion picture Heaven and Earth Magic and its thematic relationship to the Nintendo games Donkey Kong (1981) and Super Mario Bros. (1985). It relies primarily on Michelson’s Kleinian reading of Heaven and Earth Magic to provide a similarly Kleinian reading of Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros.

摘要
