The construction sector of South Africa is crucial to the nation’s economic growth. This study explores the mitigating strategies for the challenges faced by the construction industry when it comes to building project delays. By identifying the mitigating strategies in the construction sector, construction professionals can avoid delays, achieve timely completion of construction projects and increase economic growth. The study adopted a quantitative survey approach which was informed by a post-positivism philosophical stance. The closed-ended questionnaire survey was used to gather the views from construction professionals who were employed in the built environment across South Africa. The literature review revealed 15 mitigating strategies which were explored. The gathered data was analysed using a 4-step analysis approach which involved data screening and reliability measures together with descriptive and exploratory factor analysis that evaluated the mitigating strategies for timely completion of building construction projects. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three core categories of mitigating strategies to being project monitoring strategies, project delivery strategies, and project progressing strategies. This study provides further theoretical background for future research in the area of mitigating strategies in building construction projects in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa which has been lacking in previous studies.
