Adoption of Smart Construction Technologies on Construction Sites in Nigeria
摘要
Technology and innovation have significantly influenced the design and construction of complex projects. However, traditional project management methods are still prevalent in many construction sites, particularly in Nigeria. This study examines smart technologies used in the Nigerian construction industry, the effects of these technologies on project delivery, and barriers to adopting these smart technologies to encourage and increase their adoption. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire to gather data from construction professionals in Lagos, Nigeria. The study identified Building Information Modeling (BIM), drones, wearable safety devices, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning as the most frequently used smart construction technology tools professionals use in the study area. In contrast, automation and robotics, as well as virtual and augmented reality, were found to be the least utilized technologies among construction professionals in Nigeria. The effects of smart construction technology include enhanced efficiency, improved safety, sustainability benefits, reduction of project time, and improved project quality, among others. However, the study also highlighted several barriers to adopting smart construction technology in Nigeria, such as the lack of regulations and standards, lack of awareness, high cost of technology, data privacy concerns, and resistance to change by professionals and stakeholders. The findings of this study will facilitate the adoption of smart construction technology among professionals, ensuring successful project execution and delivery. The study recommends that the government offer incentives to professionals and contractors, promote partnerships and collaboration, improve access to funding, create supportive regulations and policies, and encourage local innovation to successfully implement smart construction technology in Nigerian construction projects.
