In Active Semiotic Externalism, external artifacts distribute problem-solving activity. There are different ways in which artifacts may embody problems for an agent. When artifacts embody the rules of a problem (externalization of constraints), they are icons. Iconicity is defined operationally: by studying the sign, one can make new discoveries about the object. Isomorphic puzzles demonstrate that iconic representations simplify cognitive tasks, facilitating abduction by bringing complex inferential activity closer to simple perceptual judgements.
