Towards a Typology of Artistic Experimentation: Metasemiotic Experiment as Niche Construction ‘Pump’
摘要
The relational properties of semiosis can be experimented upon by metasemiotic processes (semiosis investigating semiosis). Artworks are a prime example of such metasemiotic experiments. They functions as selfinspection of semiosis, isolating variables to investigate in practice conditions for the emergence and evolution of meaning. As such, they can be categorized in three fundamental forms: artworks that investigate the material qualities of semiosis (S-dependent), its referential mechanisms (Odependent), and/or its interpretative effects (I-dependent). We offer examples of Brazilian artworks respective to each typological class: the artistic project of the Ruptura group and works from Cildo Meireles, Berna Reale, and Lygia Clark.
