This chapter traces the author’s journey from his working-class upbringing in Wigan through a 25-year military career, reflecting on formative experiences in training, operational deployments in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and Iraq, and the eventual onset of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Combining autoethnographic narrative with scholarly context, the chapter illustrates how trauma reshaped identity, well-being, and masculine ideals within the military environment. It situates the author’s lived experience alongside current research on PTSD prevalence, symptomology, and treatment challenges, highlighting barriers such as stigma and limited access to care. The discussion also considers the potential role of physical exercise as a complementary therapeutic modality for veterans. By bridging personal testimony with academic insight, the chapter contributes to a deeper understanding of trauma, recovery, and post-traumatic growth.
