Exploring the Feasibility of Waste-to-Energy Technologies Towards the UK’s Net Zero

As the UK accelerates its efforts to meet its 2050 climate change targets, Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies have emerged as a potential solution for addressing both waste management challenges and renewable energy demands. The UK’s 2050 climate change target, set under the legally binding Climate Change Act (2008) and reinforced by the Net Zero Strategy (2021), aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. This requires significant reductions in carbon emissions across all sectors, including waste management, energy production, and industrial processes. While WtE processes have been widely studied in global sustainability contexts, their specific role in supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions remains underexplored. This research critically examines the feasibility of WtE technologies in contributing to the UK’s climate change mitigation strategy. It evaluates the environmental, economic, and policy dimensions of WtE implementation, assessing both the opportunities and limitations within the framework of UK environmental regulations. The study survey gathered structured responses from key stakeholders in waste management, energy production, and policymaking to explore the social, technical, and regulatory challenges of WtE adoption. While advancements in plant operations have enhanced technical efficiency and emission controls, public apprehensions persist regarding air quality, health risks, and environmental impact. Economic and regulatory barriers further complicate large-scale integration, necessitating stronger policy support, technological innovation, and community engagement. 53% of the respondent believes that WtE contributes to the broader discourse by positioning WtE as a key component of the UK’s decarbonization strategy. The findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers, advocating for evidence-based decision-making to optimize WtE's role in achieving a sustainable and resilient future for the UK and beyond.
