In this chapter, basic concepts of generation, amplification, and propagation of a high-power laser beam are presented in Sects. 4.1 and 4.2. We describe basic formulation of laser beam propagation including nonlinear refractive index and spectral dispersion, which is used to design high-energy lasers and to analyze high-intensity laser beam propagation. Then we describe two important subjects in high-power lasers: solid-state laser materials for high-energy and high-power lasers (Sect. 4.3), and laser-induced damage of optical components (Sect. 4.4).
