This chapter investigates how virtual reality (VR) painting transforms our understanding of time within the artistic process. It examines the shift from traditional painting, where time is a static element, to a dynamic environment where time becomes a malleable medium, directly shaped by the artist. Investigations are conducted into how VR allows for the creation of virtual painting reality spacetime, where the entire virtual environment functions as the canvas. The chapter delves into the philosophical underpinnings of this shift, drawing on ideas about the nature of time and space, and how these concepts are fundamentally encapsulated within the virtual realm. It explores how VR enables artists to manipulate temporal elements such as the sequence, duration, and evolution of a brushstrokes colour and form. This effectively turns time into a compositional tool, painting with time as opposed to just painting in the dimension of time. These techniques create immersive experiences that challenge traditional notions of a painting’s temporality. Furthermore, considerations of how artists are using these new temporal possibilities to create works that unfold across time are explored. These investigations examine how this manipulation of time impacts the viewer’s experience and understanding of the artwork, with examples from my own practice, and how it opens up new avenues for artistic expression and narrative.

摘要
