This chapter examines the evolving relationship between media arts and fine arts, specifically within the context of Virtual Reality (VR) painting. Specifically, whilst the media arts are a relative newcomer associated with technological developments, fine art painting has a long and illustrious tradition. It is argued that VR represents a significant technological advancement that challenges traditional boundaries and necessitates a re-evaluation of fine art painting as a fluid medium. The emergence of VR as an artistic tool prompts a crucial question: should VR painting be considered a medium in its own right or integrated within existing artistic contexts? The author contends that VR enriches and extends the tradition of painting, offering novel possibilities for artistic expression by merging the ethereal nature of virtual space with the visceral tradition of paint on canvas. This exploration highlights how artists navigate this liminal space, creating works that simultaneously honour painterly tradition and boldly claim new territory in the digital realm.

摘要
