Virtual Reality and Painting in the Fourth Dimension
摘要
This chapter explores the relationship between Virtual Reality (VR) and fine art painting, positioning it as a pivotal moment in art history akin to the development of perspective and photography. VR empowers artists to transcend the constraints of the physical world, enabling three-dimensional brushstrokes that evolve in space and time, effectively painting in the ‘fourth dimension’. Whilst rooted in traditional painting techniques, VR opens unprecedented artistic possibilities through new pigments, fluid motion, and the manipulation of perspective. The chapter traces the evolution of painting alongside technological advancements, from early pigments to digital tools, highlighting how each innovation has spurred artistic revolutions. Ultimately, VR is presented as a transformative tool for painters, offering a fresh canvas for exploration and redefining the very definition of fine art painting in a digital age.
