Green Policies for Building Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems in Africa
摘要
Integrating green policies into health systems is a valuable strategy for building resilience and sustainability in Africa. Climate change poses significant threats to health systems, exacerbating existing challenges such as resource constraints, infrastructure gaps, and the spread of diseases. Green policies, which emphasize environmental sustainability and the efficient use of resources, offer a pathway to mitigate these challenges while promoting long-term health and well-being. This chapter explores the role of green policies in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of health systems in Africa, drawing on insights from various studies and case examples. For instance, South Africa has introduced solar-powered clinics to ensure uninterrupted health care delivery in off-grid areas, while Rwanda’s adoption and implementation of green building standards in hospital infrastructure has promoted energy efficiency and environmental conservation. The chapter discusses the need for green policies for health in Africa and gives insights into the benefits of adopting green policies in health care. Using “WHO global strategy on health, environment and climate change”, the chapter discusses that “the transformation needed to improve lives and wellbeing sustainably through healthy environments” is based on the nature of green policies that are made and implemented across African countries. The chapter concludes that integrating green policies into health care systems is vital for building resilience and sustainability in Africa. These green policies not only address environmental challenges but also improve health outcomes and reduce costs, making them a critical component of future health care infrastructure development.
