This chapter is the first part of a diptych devoted to adaptations of Russell’s notion of logical construction. It focuses on the early publications of Norbert Wiener (1894–1964), who studied philosophy with Russell before devoting himself to mathematics. Wiener uses the logical resources developed in the Principia to build a “relativistic” theory inspired by James’s pragmatism. We show how Wiener’s use of logic makes it possible to reformulate James’s main theses, but we also highlight how the pragmatist context enables the very notion of logical construction to be modified.

摘要

This chapter is the first part of a diptych devoted to adaptations of Russell’s notion of logical construction. It focuses on the early publications of Norbert Wiener (1894–1964), who studied philosophy with Russell before devoting himself to mathematics. Wiener uses the logical resources developed in the Principia to build a “relativistic” theory inspired by James’s pragmatism. We show how Wiener’s use of logic makes it possible to reformulate James’s main theses, but we also highlight how the pragmatist context enables the very notion of logical construction to be modified.
