The connection between identity and extremism is a characteristic of contemporary society. In this chapter, we consider how leadership can shape identity in a direction that requires followers to take more extreme action. However, the inverse relationship is also considered for the relationship between situational factors related to identity instability and insecurity with the willingness to accept charismatic political leadership. Special attention is paid to right-wing extremism and ethno-identity policies as a reaction to multicultural identity policies. Such policies are particularly characteristic of populist political movements. Nativism is taken as an example of such a type of policy. Euroskepticism, on the other hand, is presented as a policy that is the fruit of the tensions caused by cultural uncertainty.
