A Systematic Research on Generative Artificial Intelligence Usage in Learning English Language by the Students in the Higher Education Institution of Oman
摘要
In the digital era, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed various sectors, including education, through diverse tools that assist students in their daily academic activities. The increase in AI adoption among university students indicates that they are now utilising AI tools like ChatGPT, marking a significant rise from previous years. A survey reveals that over 75% of students integrate AI into their studies, including tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Microsoft Copilot. Given the immense proliferation of AI in education, it is crucial to understand its role in learning. This study investigated the extent to which AI tools influence students’ engagement, motivation, and autonomy in learning English. Employing a mixed- method approach, the study combined quantitative techniques such as ANOVA and regression modelling with qualitative inquiries to comprehensively substantiate the contributions made. While ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in effectiveness among the AI tools used across various learning domains, indicating that some applications are more beneficial for specific language skills, regression analysis illustrated that engagement, motivation, and autonomy, when analysed collectively, can explain a substantial amount of variation in student performance, each providing a positive contribution to better results. These qualitative findings support the data and suggest that AI tools offer personalised and immediate feedback to learners, thus enhancing self- directed learning. The results also align with previous research showing that AI- mediated instruction positively influences learning motivation, self- regulation, and outcomes. In conclusion, instruction using AI tools in English language teaching indeed fosters engagement, motivation, and autonomy, which drive the pursuit of improved performance and desired outcomes. Considering these insights, it is recommended that educators utilize AI tools thoughtfully to promote better learning results and prepare students for the evolving digital language competency demands of today’ s world.
