African states continue to face the dual challenges of lifting millions of Africans out of extreme poverty and raising incomes through sustained economic growth. At the same time, these countries are among the most vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change, as global warming, rising sea levels, flooding, and desertification threaten lives and livelihoods across the continent. Amid these challenges, Member States of the African Union have negotiated a groundbreaking free trade agreement. The Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area to facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services. Climate change is a complex multidimensional problem that demands collective solutions from diverse disciplines and actors at the global, regional, and local levels. The international trade regime can play a vital role in advancing environmental sustainability. Many trade agreements (global, regional, and bilateral) now include substantive environmental chapters that commit parties to addressing issues such as climate change, sustainable forest management, meaningful public engagement, marine pollution, and sustainable fisheries management. This chapter examines weather the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area serves as an effective instrument for achieving environmental objectives, including climate change mitigation and adaptation. It concludes by proposing a climate-friendly path forward for the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area as its parties continue to deposit their instruments of ratification.
