Adolescent girlsChildren in farmingPromoting communitiesGirl-child in theGender Western Cape, South AfricaSouth Africa, face intersecting inequalitiesInequality rooted in genderGender, poverty, geography, and cultural norms that limit their access to education and empowerment. This action researchAction research study explored how contextually tailored non-formal educationNon-formal education programmes could serve as transformative interventions for this marginalised population. An intersectional lens informed the design and implementation of this non-formal educational programme for rural girls. The programme involved a residential workshop focussed on building life skills, genderGender rights awareness, and empowerment specifically for adolescent girls in the Western Cape’s farming communities. Interviews and observations with participants, parentsParents/guardians, and mentors assessed the impact of the intervention through an intersectional lens. The study highlights the significant contribution of mentorship in fostering growth and development for girls beyond what their families provide. The girls shared their acquired knowledge on sexual health, financial literacy, and more within their communities, positioning them as catalysts for broader intergenerational dialogue around genderGender and other inequalitiesInequality. The study concludes that non-formal educational models can equip marginalised rural girls in the Western Cape with practical tools to navigate intersecting barriers whilst fostering agencyAgency and inclusion.
