Unfolding Gond Women’s Struggles and Agency in the Traditional Livelihood of the Bamboo Craft Practice

The Gond tribe is oneBamboo craft of the marginalised and vulnerable groups within the hierarchy of the Indian social system. Historically, Gond womenWomen have demonstrated resilience and agencyAgency, actively contributing to their everyday lifeworlds. GenderGender relations within the community are shaped by daily practices, which can be both empowering and oppressive for womenWomen. Among traditional livelihoodLivelihood activities, bamboo craftBamboo craft is a seasonal practice in which womenWomen play a significant role. However, the significance of Gond women’sWomen labour often remains unrecognised, leading to their contributions being undervalued and their status within families and communities largely unacknowledged. This study seeks to reveal the full extent of Gond women’sWomen contributions to women’sWomen agencyAgency and the interface of space within bamboo craftBamboo craft activities. A phenomenological approachPhenomenological approach was employed to understand the lived experiences of Gond womenWomen from three villages located in the Korchi block of Gadchiroli district, IndiaIndia. Using an intersectionalityIntersectionality approach, this chapter foregrounds their struggles and delineates their agencyAgency in transforming traditional livelihoodLivelihood structures. Aligned with Sustainable Development GoalSustainable development goals (SDG) 10–-reduced inequalities—this study emphasises the importance of social interventionsSocial intervention at the community level. By drawing on community values and harnessing traditional skills and knowledge, Gond womenWomen can be empoweredEmpowered, thereby opening new livelihoodLivelihood opportunities. Community-basedCommunity-based interventions play a critical role in cultivating values of genderGender equality at both family and community levels.
