Livelihood Precarity: Social Marginalisation and Resource Degradation Among the Seharia in Rajasthan, India

The SehariaSeharia struggle due to inadequate resources, limited employment opportunities, and poor nutrition. Historically, they have depended on forests; however, this is changing due to changes in forest-related policies and composition. Given this situation, the study examined the livelihoodLivelihood-related problems faced by the SehariaSeharia in Rajasthan. The research employed a qualitative exploratory design, utilising in-depth interviews with community members as a method for data collection. This chapter is based on interviews with 13 community members. The main themes emerging from the findings include forest degradationForest degradation, land grants and land grabs, and bonded labour, all of which profoundly affect the conditions of the SehariaSeharia community. The data indicate that the SehariaSeharia community experiences persistent socio-economic exclusion, making the achievement of the Sustainable Development GoalSustainable development goals (SDG) of reducing inequalityInequality and promotingPromoting inclusion elusive in their context. In response, the study proposes the adoption of a producers’ organisation or cooperative model as a potential strategy to enhance their current livelihoodLivelihood conditions.
