Keeping the Books: Perspectivalism and Representation
摘要
Abstract Approaching the metaphysics of time in the traditional, linguistically driven way has various drawbacks. We have addressed some of these in Chap. 2; and our subsequent discussion so far has steered clear of any claims that primarily concern language (or representation, more generally) rather than reality itself. But some linguistic matters prove unavoidable when constructing a rather unconventional metaphysics such as perspectivalism. For, just as any other metaphysical theory, perspectivalism is articulated via the use of language, yet the way reality is envisioned to be by the perspectivalist raises some serious issues about the proper expressibility of the theory itself. In order to tackle these, we will have to say more about how linguistic representation might be taken to work within a perspectivalist framework. This is the main task of the present chapter.
